Seminar Leader: Retired Austin Chief of Police, Brian Manley (Off Duty Management)
Date: Tuesday, June 28, 2022
Time: 1:30 pm
Location: Meeting Room # 307
OVERVIEW
A deep dive into some of the most common reasons officers and agencies are exposed to the off-duty blind spot. We will explore this by creating an immersive experience with leadership interviews, personal testimonials, and video documentation.
This presentation will review factual data and quotes from recent headlines and real-life experiences to reinforce why agencies would be wise to make managing their off-duty
program a priority sooner rather than later.
TOPICS BEING COVERED:
Risk, Job Tracking, Liability, Job Equity, Time, Costs, Resources to mitigate Risk before the Blind Spot makes the Headlines.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Assess the risk officers, agencies, and communities are exposed to during off-duty jobs.
2. Gain knowledge about the technology tools available to support transparency in job tracking,
job equity, and reporting of hours worked for an off-duty program.
3. Understand the discrepancies between on-duty and off-duty liability and workers’ compensation
coverages and the appropriate application of these policies.
4. Analyze the overall operation of an off-duty program and why it can be costly to a city or municipality.
5. Review the benefits of a centrally administered off-duty program and how it can help law enforcement agencies save time, money, and resources.
Topic: Customized Professional Development
Seminar Leader: Dr. Paulette Laubsch
(Fairleigh Dickinson University)
Date: Tuesday, June 28, 2022
Time: 2:30 pm
Location: Meeting Room # 308/309
OVERVIEW
This session explores how you can tailor professional development for yourself, or for your team, to ensure you climb the ladder and/or have the most productive workforce possible.
Professional development has two dimensions. First, you can engage in customized professional development in order to enhance your skills, knowledge, and abilities (SKAs), to enhance your own productivity, efficiency, and career. Additional competencies make you better prepared for higher-level positions. Second, as supervisor, you may determine that an individual or the whole team should be groomed for advancement, which likewise requires a tailored education plan.
Professional development can be accomplished through formal training and education, attendance at conferences, and individual efforts, such as reading and completing self-help publications, but a formal process leads to better outcomes. This includes assessing needed skills, knowledge, and abilities needed for current and future positions as well as the SKAs of the current staff.
